Mii's Great Pokemon Replay

Post by mii »

So earlier in the year I ended up trading a bunch of my legendaries to my coworker's son who was really getting into Pokemon and had only access to ScarVio. After all, I can just catch them again, so it's not a huge deal. He'll enjoy them more than I did - I shoved them into a box on Home and forgot about them for years  ).

To that end, I started replaying the games. I did this once before back in 2019/2020 to make my first full/living pokedex before SWSH came out and it was a great time and I played some games that I hadn't actually played to completion (XY, SuMo). So, to replace the couple legendaries that I had traded away my only ones, I figured a repeat was in order.

This time I don't need to make a whole living dex so I'm not super concerned with completion, though I am trying to make a dex where the pokemon are all from the gen they originated in (as best as I can, there's just some pokemon that I can't get till later due to game choice and not being able to trade in some gens). I also want to have my main team for each game have as many champion ribbons as possible.

My play order has been Leaf Green > Soul Silver > Omega Ruby (I have an origina Ruby cartridge but went with OR because transferring off of two cartridges would destroy me) > Platinum so far. I'm currently levelling for the E4 in Platinum.

Anyone else done this? Or have fond (or not so fond) memories of early gens?

Thoughts so far

- LG/gen 3 is so good I love. It's fascinating to me how well LG still holds up despite being ancient in video game years.
- SS exp curve is still as unpleasant as I remember. Get wrecked, Red. Ughhhhhhh.
- OR/gen 5 is. Fine. I don't mind the gameplay or anything, but RSE storywise was always kind of just there for me. Ocean Mauville continues to be the most depressing but cool thing in existence.
- Gen4 is my love and probably my favourite gen, it peaked for me here.
- Platinum is fine, though I played gen4 on Pearl originally so the first time I played Platinum the differences really stood out to me. Barry is... magical. Cyrus is such a poser lol. Back when gen4 first came out I'm sure he was the coolest thing but he's such a hypocrite. I also enjoy how he just peaces out in the Distortion World to... work on himself, I guess.
- I'm going to be here forever, DPPt has an extremely long post-game. SIGH lol

It's kinda funny to think of how many games and versions there are now, and I love hearing your experience replaying them.

I'll admit that I'm a filthy casual and my experience is locked to the times they've come out and I haven't played them all. I played Yellow & Silver as a kid, didn't have a GBA, played THE SHIT out of Diamond, didn't quite finish Black, skipped X/Y, DIDN'T GET BEYOND THE INTRO IN SUN/MOON, and then finally fell back full in on Sw/Sh and completely pilled on that game specifically. Sw/Sh was so on the nose for me I knew ScarVio wasn't going to hit the same. I did enjoy playing Arceus a lot though. ;_; I haven't been able to play ZA much yet, but when I do I'm gonna just go whole hog.

Looking forward to the next mainline game. I'm sure they took a lot of lessons from ScarVio that'll make it greater.

For a bit there people would just fly through those games so fast I couldn't keep up and lose motivation, but I've gotten better about that. I picked up Sw/Sh again a couple months after it came out and I found it a lot more enjoyable than in the peak of hype. I found I don't enjoy rushing through games so I can keep up with everyone's excitement. :'p But I guess that's not too surprising.

I do really want to play Sun/Moon again some day. I think I'd like it!

Gosh a true trainer!

I played Red back in the day, but didn't enjoy playing handheld games or the old turn base. So I didn't play a Pokemon game (other than Go) until Sword/Shield cause I could play it on my TV. It was fun and I super enjoyed my time with it. Then Legends: Arceus came out and it really nailed what I like most about Pokemon - nature. ZA has been fun, too. I did roll credits last week I think, so making my way through the post game stuff... may pick up the DLC later, but man it looks way too grindy for me and that is what I dislike most about Pokemon lol

I was kind of the same, I played the shit out of Pearl back in the day, picked up Black but didn't do much with it, repeat for Y, and a friend got me Ultra Moon as a Christmas present and I think I only played it on a trip I took at the time. Replaying the games outside of their heyday, on my own terms and at my own pace really helped a lot with getting me to connect and to complete them. I'm curious how my thoughts will have changed for the games that are no longer new to me during this replay, and how games like SWSH will feel now that they're removed from their relevance.

I don't want to spoil much about the post-game in LZA because there is some good stuff but I hope you like the Z-A Royale...

Seconding that though, while I do find modern games to be far too easy I did not really appreciate having to stop momentum to grind in the older ones. Which is where I am now in Platinum and procrastinating fiercely. ;)

I played platinum on my phone months ago and I stopped at the elite 4, the grind kinda had a bad taste in my mouth. The game brutally pivot from "somewhat easy, not too much commitement on the battle" to "oh yeah you now need to beat four trainers in a row and even beating one of them require you to at least do several trips to the move remover to kick all the hm crap and use actual viable moves on all your mons instead"

Idk I don’t think that having some difficulty and having to use your brain in a pokémon game is bad but it feels that the curve could have been a bit smoother.
